5 things you do when your hip hurts

This post should be titled 10 things you do when your hip or leg or back hurts a lot for a long time, but I have to set a limit somewhere. I also couldn't come up with 10 things that were funny and not sad; like the fact that I sleep with a heating pad under my butt and wake up with a sweaty behind every day.

When your hip/leg/back hurts you…
  • Start taking stairs like you're first learning them again, moving both feet to one step before moving to the next.

  • Consider very carefully whether or not your business in a given room is complete before leaving it.

  • Stretch and walk around for 5 minutes to loosen up before leaving the house so the neighbors don't notice your limp. (They probably do anyway.)

  • Wonder if you look like House, MD when you walk.

  • Wonder if getting a cane would make you as cool/dorky (your pick) as House.
The satellite installation guy came about a half hour late last night, but he did show up and I have to give him credit for that. He was at our house until almost 7:30 installing everything.
We have 2 satellite dishes now, because the national programming comes from one satellite, and the local and HD programming comes from another.

A few people have asked how much we're saving and why we switched, so I figure I might as well tell you all. Comcast sucks. Our experience with technical support and customer service has always been a nightmare, they charge outrageous prices because until recently there hasn't been any real competition, and they know all of this and laugh all the way to the bank. So I was very pleased to make this phone call on Sunday:

Her: Thanks for calling Comcast. My name is Whatever, how can I help you?
Me: Hi Whatever, I'm calling to make you an offer.
Her: I'm sorry?
Me: I have my computer in front of me and I see that I can get a much better deal if I switch to satellite. I'm calling to give you the opportunity to keep me as a customer. This is your chance to offer me a deal and keep me.
Her: I see that we gave you a 6-month retention deal 7 months ago, so you don't qualify for another retention deal yet. The only thing I can offer you is the "Triple Play" deal where we can give you phone, internet, …
Me: (interrupting) I'm going to stop you there. I don't have a land line and I don't want one. I just made a deal for FiOS internet and got rid of your cable internet a few weeks ago. If you can't offer me a good deal on just TV, then I'm going to go ahead and schedule my Satellite installation and call back to cancel my cable.
Her: Sorry, I can't do that.
Me: Ok, well thanks then.

We were paying just a hair under $100 a month for digital cable with DVR (and a handfull of HD channels that are included with digital cable) from Comcast. The "retention deal" she was talking about is when they gave us 6 months at a reduced rate, somewhere around $60.

We're getting essentially the same package from Dish Network. We picked the "America's Top 100" plan – with most or all of the channels we watch, with HD and DVR for two TVs, and it's going to cost us $41 per month for 10 months, and then $61 per month after that. We signed up for an 18 month commitment and they waived the $50 installation charge. I think we're saving about $10 a month with FiOS, too, so by making the switch we're saving $70 for 10 months, and then $50 per month after that, assuming Dish doesn't offer us retention deals after our promotional rate and our 8 remaining months are up. ;)
