Playing For The Right Team

I think that Megan is really starting to enjoy this baby thing. I came home from my business trip on Saturday afternoon, and she had gone yard-sailing (is that a pun or just a misspelling?) and picked up lots of baby stuff: bibs, shelving to put in the nursery closet, baby books, a toddler carrier (backpack style), a picture that will fit our nursery theme nicely, assuming nublet's a boy — which everyone thinks — a couple of plate/cup/etc sets (we didn't see any we liked at Baby's R Us!), onesies, footy pajamas, and a couple of infant sleeper bags. MomT had bought this during the secret-keeping phase, and says that she almost slipped up and posted it to Flickr, before coming to her senses and realizing that doing so would give away the secret.

Gramma's Team But we have an obligation to raise our child with morals and standards, which is why Megan also picked up this little gem, to complete the set:

Nublet's Team Here are the final few journal entries leading up to the day that I announced the pregnancy:

April 26 Megan's birthday was just 8 days ago, and mine was on Monday. Yesterday, Friday, I received the coolest birthday gift ever. I got to see my baby's heartbeat. We have the first pictures of our baby — the ultrasound — on our fridge. It looks like a lima bean. We met with the NP at Megan's OBGYN office, and we like them. Unfortunately, we're not so thrilled (so far) with Brandywine Hospital — the hospital that the doctors work at, and where we are (for now) planning on delivering. When we went in for the ultrasound, the whole first floor looked a little dated, and the equipment looked old and outdated. (They don't even have a 3D ultrasound machine!) We are giving them the benefit of the doubt for now though, and are attempting to get a tour of the Maternity floor scheduled. We talked about it and agree that if the Maternity floor is in the same shape, we're going to check out other local hospitals. Chester County has free scheduled tours, and having spent a fair amount of time there myself, I have good feelings about Paoli Hospital, too. So there are other options. It would mean changing OBGYN's, but it's not like we've built up a relationship with them yet. Based on the average of various stem to stern measurements taken at the ultrasound, it's estimated that our baby is now 9 weeks and 3 days old (I added the day since the ultrasound), and that puts the due date at November 26th — the day before Thanksgiving.
May 15 A few weeks ago, we toured the Brandywine Hospital maternity facilities. Pros: Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Post-Partum are all in the same room. From admission to release, you're in the same room (except in the event of a Cesarean). Super close to home. Cons: Seemed kind of small and low-volume. There were only 2 recently delivered baby's on the Saturday morning that we toured, and 2 nurses working (good ratio, though!). All the lights were off — it was just so dark and quiet. Megan says: "I'd tell them to turn all the lights on! I don't want to feel like I'm hushed in a library." Today, we toured Chester County Hospital maternity facilities. Pros: LDR room was spacious and very nice (hard wood floors!), lots of natural light, updated decor. Cons: No guarantee of private rooms, and if you are sharing a room ("~50-60% of the time") the father can't spend the night. That was the show stopper for us. Not only would we be uncomfortable and stressed about sharing a room, but I really don't need to get arrested on my baby's birthday for refusing to leave. We've decided to stay with our Brandywine Hospital and our OBGYN. We meet the second doctor in the practice at tomorrow's appointment.
May 16 We heard our little Nublet's heart today, for the first time. We saw it on our ultrasound a few weeks ago, but didn't get to hear it until today. Just… Wow!
May 18 Tomorrow is the day that I announce the pregnancy here on the blog. We are excited and terrified at the same time. I have a hunch that this feeling of excitement/terror is just called "being a parent;" and that it is going to be with me constantly, and forever-more. Everyone says that parenting "changes your life forever, in ways you could never predict or understand until it happens." And even though they're kind of baiting you to ask why or how, the correct answer is, "I know, and I can't wait!" Because as they tell you: you can't predict it, and you can't understand it. You just have to accept it. And we have.

Is it too early to start thinking about Christmas gifts? No? Great! While you're thinking about it, I'd LOVE a green Speck 13" Macbook case! (If I don't buy one for myself first…)
